Can you feel the spring in your step?
Rokjesdag ('Short Skirt Day') is the name given to the first day of spring when women in the Netherlands feel the sudden urge to discard their winter woollies in favour of a short skirt or dress. Usually in the middle of April, it’s the day when you can sit outside again without a coat!
‘Rokjesdag’ is an ode to the Dutch writer/columnist Martin Bril who died in 2009. He first used the term to describe the wonderful feeling he got when spring finally emerged: ‘It’s the one day in the year when, as if by magic, the entire female population takes to the streets in short skirts and bare legs.’
This year the event will be held at the Science Park in Amsterdam. Sign up quickly as numbers are restricted. Subscribe via the button.
